Q. When do people hire a life coach?

A. When they want more from their lives. There may be a long-held dream they haven't yet achieved, or they're not truly satisfied with their life choices or career, or they're simply ready for a personal breakthrough.

Life coaching helps people clarify their mission and design a fulfilling, happy life. I help clients set and reach their goals while encouraging them to grow, stretch their boundaries, and accomplish things they didn't think possible in the beginning. I support clients through listening, focus, strategy, motivation, and feedback. It is always my client's vision and wishes that the two of us hold high—a beacon of meaning and personal success for that individual.

When people decide to make changes in their lives, fear of those changes can hold them back. Another way people sabotage their success and avoid change is by losing focus and commitment. Maintaining the status quo has a comfort to it—even if you know it's not working for you.

In almost every case the only way around that is through it. Feel the fear and do it anyway, says Susan Jeffers. I'll help you move right past the fear. By doing it anyway, you'll realize fear doesn't have to hold you back!

Q. What if I don't live near you?

A. One of the nicest things about the modern world is that geography doesn't matter a bit—all my coaching sessions are held over the phone. I have clients around the world, from the U.S. and Canada to Europe to Australia. You'd be amazed at how much can be done in a phone conversation.

Q. How does life coaching work?

A. Sessions may be focused on one specific goal or challenge you're facing, or on a broader set of issues, as you like. Together we design a coaching plan that meets your individual needs and schedule. The usual arrangement is weekly sessions lasting around 40 minutes each, but we'll work together to figure out the length and frequency that best supports you. The minimum is two hours each month—below that, it's hard for people to maintain big movement toward their goals.

Q. How long do people work with life coaches?

A. The average coaching relationship lasts close to a year, but it varies according to the client's wishes and goals. My clients make at least a four-month commitment to the process. Most of their desired goals and projects are big enough that they'll take several months to complete. In addition, successful coaching relies on a good connection between coach and client. Our connection naturally becomes deeper and even more effective over time, which enhances the results and benefits for my clients.

Q. How much does life coaching cost?

A. That depends on the length of the sessions, the number of sessions per month, and how many months you'd like to be coached. See my pricing page to learn about my coaching packages.

Once you've done that, simply email or call (888) 926-2244* for a free, 30-minute collaborative consultation so we can see if we're a good fit for each other. If we are, we'll find a session plan that works great for you.

If you're worried about cost, take a moment to look at coaching in a different way. Ask yourself how much the benefits you'll receive from coaching are worth to you. Understanding those benefits, and what you want to achieve, will help you decide whether coaching is right for you.

Now that you've done that, how do you feel?

*If you're outside the U.S., email and we'll arrange an alternative phone number.

Q. Do life coaches have specialties?

A. Most do. There are marketing coaches, financial coaches, spiritual coaches, leadership coaches, and many others. My personal mission is to help other people find and live their life purpose. That mission dovetails into my niches: writers and artists and people seeking their life purpose and ideal career.

Q. What are the differences between life coaching, consulting, and therapy?

A. In a nutshell, therapy is focused on healing wounds from the past, and on bringing a client from dysfunction to function. Life coaching is not a substitute for therapy. If a client is in a lot of emotional pain or distress, therapy is probably a better choice.

Coaching is focused primarily on achievement and fulfillment in the present and future. Life coaching clients have worked through and accepted their pasts, and are ready to concentrate on what happens from here forward—and on going from functional to exceptional!

Consultants are focused on results, and are hired to produce a certain outcome. Consultants are positioned as authorities who advise their clients how to solve particular problems. Life coaches are focused on people and connections, and are hired to support the client as he or she achieves a desired outcome. We guide clients to their own solutions, rather than recommending or imposing our own.

Therapists and consultants are often seen as experts in their fields. An important distinction about coaching is that the coach and client have a peer relationship. The coach doesn't need to know more than her client about a particular issue. Instead, she connects with the client as a trained listener, a genuine supporter, and an observer—offering a second pair of eyes and ears and an additional brain focused on options and new paths for the client.

The result is a life of achievement and joy for the client—and for the coach, too!

Q. Why "Nine Lives Coaching"?

A. Coaching is about clarifying your vision, finding your life purpose, and going for what you truly want. If you're not thrilled with the life you're living, you have the power to choose another one.

Q. What does the free trial session involve?

A. There's absolutely no pressure or obligation. It's an opportunity for the two of us to get to know each other. Just bring a topic you want to work on—a problem or challenge or "stuck" place. We'll talk about it and look for solutions to get you past it. You can also ask any questions you may have—I want to be sure you have all the information you're looking for.

At the end of the session, if I feel we're a good match and that I can help you reach your goals, I'll ask whether you'd like to hire me as your coach. If that suits you, then we'll set up a time for ongoing coaching.

A. Feel free to email or call me at (888) 926-2244. I'd be happy to answer any questions or set up a free trial session of coaching for you. If you're outside the U.S., email me and we'll arrange an alternative phone number.
